Why I Switched to Fizz Mobile (with referral code!)

This is not a sponsored post! If you use my referral code MLPRM, you get a discount* and I will receive some rewards on my Fizz account. Keep reading to know where exactly to enter the code, because I was nervous I'd miss it.

*Discount is typically $25, but may be $40 depending on what province you’re located in!

My cell phone plan is one of those things that I chose a decade ago and never really looked at again. Lately I have become far more budget conscious, and I realized I was paying way more than necessary (for way more data than I actually use). When I finally sat down to compare plans, I landed on Fizz — and I genuinely cannot believe I waited this long.

What Is Fizz and Who Can Use It?

Fizz is a Quebec-born mobile carrier launched in 2018 by Videotron, one of the bigger telecom players in the province. It operates entirely online — there are no physical stores, no call centres, no waiting on hold. You manage everything through the app or website.

You can subscribe to Fizz if you’re located in specific provinces in Canada (when this post was published: Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, BC, and Manitoba). Their map shows different zones for “subscription area” and “coverage area”, and this is to show that your phone will still work even if you’re traveling around Canada!

Why I Chose Fizz

I went through the usual suspects — Fido, Bell, Koodo, Public Mobile — and Fizz came out cheapest for what I actually need. I'm on the Canada-wide plan with 10GB of data, and the monthly cost is genuinely embarrassing compared to what I was paying before ($29 per month!!). In my mind I use looooads of data, but I am connected to wifi more than I realize (at home, at the gym, working at cafes) and only really use data when I’m running errands.

A few things that set it apart from the big carriers:

  • Rollover data — unused data carries forward to your next month instead of disappearing

  • No contracts — month-to-month, change or cancel whenever

  • No activation fees — eSIM is free

  • No hidden fees or overages — you only pay for what you set up

Because everything is month-to-month, I know I can upgrade my data if I find 10GB isn't cutting it — no penalty, no call to customer service, just a few taps.

(Seriously, not having to make any phone calls to sign up was life changing for this phone-anxious queen)

4G LTE vs. 5G: Which Should You Choose?

Fizz rolled out 5G service in late 2025, so this is now a real decision point when you're setting up your plan. Carriers love to push 5G as a must-have upgrade, but it’s often just an expensive upsell for speeds you won't notice.

  • Who might need 5G: Content creators uploading massive 4K video files on the go, mobile gamers who need zero lag, and people who frequently need a reliable signal inside packed concert crowds or sports stadiums.

  • Who needs 4G LTE: The practical user who just wants to scroll social media, stream music, and use Google Maps without overpaying. It is cheaper, faster than you think, and much gentler on your phone's battery life.

I personally chose to go with 4G LTE. The most data-heavy thing I do when not connected to wifi is content creation for IG stories, but I upload most of my content when connected to wifi, so paying a premium for 5G speed makes no sense for my normal use. Plus, when I go trail running or travel to more remote areas, 5G towers barely exist anyway, so 4G gives me exactly what I need while keeping my monthly bill as low as possible. (Plus, I know that I can always upgrade if I need to!)

eSIM vs. Physical SIM: Which Fits Your Style?

When signing up for a new plan, you'll choose between a digital eSIM or a traditional plastic SIM card. They offer the exact same network coverage and data speeds, but handle setup and device switching quite differently.

  • Why choose an eSIM: It's a digital profile downloaded directly to your phone via a QR code. It is ideal for instant activation without waiting for shipping, or for frequent travelers who want to load multiple international data plans onto one device. With Fizz, getting an eSIM is free.

  • Why choose a physical SIM: It is a tangible, plug-and-play plastic chip. It is best for anyone who prefers a foolproof hardware backup that requires zero internet or tech troubleshooting to activate or move to a new device. With Fizz, a physical SIM costs $15.

I decided to go with a physical SIM, even though it is more expensive (I paid a total of $17.25 with tax). I upgrade my phone every couple of years and wanted a zero-hassle swap without needing wifi connection or carrier help. Planete Courrier delivered it to my Montreal doorstep in under two days: I ordered it on Monday afternoon, and it arrived Wednesday morning. It includes standard SIM, micro SIM, and nano SIM compatible sizes.

Where to Enter the Referral Code

We’ve all accidentally placed an order without entering a referral code, haven’t we? This is the part I was most anxious about, because I did not want to miss the referral code window. Here's exactly how it works:

  1. Create your Fizz account at fizz.ca (yes! you create your account first!)

  2. Wait for your SIM if you ordered a physical one, or activate your eSIM right away

  3. Go through the process of signing up for your plan.

    • Choose your plan, and before you pay there is a step for the referral code!

It's very obvious, I promise you can’t miss it. It’s like Fizz wants people to enter a code.

Reminder to use my code MLPRM! On your second month of service, your credit will be applied and I’ll get a credit to my account too :). The amount varies by province, but is usually $25 or $40.
